The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

In April 1995 premiered my first program on Public Access Cable TV, and on one of the subject matters I addressed back then was a UN treaty that dealt with the rights of a child. Now according to the Bible, Christian parents have the responsibility for the upbringing of their children.

"And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Eph. 6:4).

"Children obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right, Honour thy father and mother" (Eph. 6:1,2).

The UN treaty on the rights of the child is socialism which requires people to turn over their lives to the care of the state and now only the parents lives but their children too. With the state being in control, the parents authority is no more. In 1995, 150 countries ratified this treaty. Today, almost 13 years later, 193 countries have ratified it, only two have not...The two countries who have not ratified this treaty is the United States and Somalia.

As the United States gets more liberal, and most certainly will with the next President no matter which party wins in 2008, these types of things will become more and more of a danger towards Christians when it comes to the freedom of worship. Here are a few articles from the UN treaty on the rights of the child that poses a threat to Christian parents all over the world.

Article 13, The child shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice. This means parents could be taken to court and punished if they prevent their children from watching pornography, or listening to rock music, or tv in general. According to the UN a child has that right to view or listen to those things.

Article 14,  States Parties shall respect the right of the child to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This means children would have the right to practice any religion of their choice and parents would not have any legal grounds to do anything about it.

Article 15, States Parties recognize the rights of the child to freedom of association and to freedom of peaceful assembly.  This could give children a right to "associate" with any whom they please such as someone using drugs. Now the guy might be peaceful using the drugs, but under this article a parent would have no legal right to prevent his/her child from keeping that sort of evil company.

There are many other things as well, under the treaty it would be against to law to spank your child. The government would have to provide the children with free attorneys to take their parents to court. Education has to be free and state approved. Meaning anything politically incorrect would not be allowed private or public. Mathew 10:21 comes to mind..."children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death."  Also 2 Tim. 3:1-3, "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy. Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good".

When Bill Clinton left office this UN treaty was virtually forgotten in the US. Conservative and religious outlets of news media.  But the rest of the world has paid close attention to it and has endorsed it. Christians must pray for their governments, for their freedom to raise their children in the ways of the Lord, and not in the ways of the State.
