God & the Spirit World
Folk ReligionChinese folk religion involves a vast spirit world of gods (including deified historical figures), local deities, and ancestors who continue to influence the living. There is no single creator God. The universe is governed by spiritual forces (qi), fate, and the balance of yin and yang.
GraceThere is one living and true God who created all things and governs all things by his providence. The LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else (Deuteronomy 4:39). The spirit beings acknowledged in folk religion are not gods but either demonic forces or fictions. All the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens (Psalm 96:5).
Ancestor Veneration
Folk ReligionAncestors are believed to continue in a spirit world where they can influence the fortunes of their living descendants. They must be honoured with offerings of food, incense, paper money, and ritual prayers at family altars and graves. Failure to honour ancestors brings misfortune; proper veneration brings blessing.
GraceThe dead do not communicate with the living, nor do the living have any means of communicating with the dead. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing (Ecclesiastes 9:5). God explicitly forbids necromancy and consulting the dead: There shall not be found among you… a consulter with familiar spirits… for all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).
Sin & Misfortune
Folk ReligionSuffering and misfortune are attributed to bad karma, offended ancestors or spirits, unfavourable feng shui, or imbalanced spiritual forces. Moral wrongdoing is a concern, but primarily because it upsets the harmony of spiritual relationships, not because it is guilt before a holy God.
GraceSuffering ultimately traces to the Fall of Adam and the sinfulness of man before a holy God. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Romans 5:12). The remedy for sin is not ritual correction of spiritual imbalances but the blood of Jesus Christ.
Salvation & Ritual
Folk ReligionWellbeing and good fortune are secured through correct ritual observance — honouring ancestors, appeasing spirits, observing auspicious dates, and performing the prescribed ceremonies. There is no doctrine of salvation from sin through a Saviour.
GraceSalvation is not the securing of earthly fortune through ritual but the deliverance of the soul from sin and hell through the blood of Jesus Christ. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold… but with the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18–19).
The Afterlife
Folk ReligionThe dead enter a spirit world (the underworld or the realm of the ancestors) where they can be helped by the prayers and offerings of the living. Some may eventually be reincarnated. The goal is not heaven but a comfortable existence in the spirit world and eventual good rebirth.
GraceIt is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). There is no reincarnation. The dead cannot be helped by the offerings of the living. The soul of the believer is immediately with Christ; the soul of the unbeliever is in torment. No ritual performed by the living affects the eternal state of the dead.
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:3
