Arthur W. Pink wrote these forty chapters as serial articles in his monthly journal Studies in the Scriptures, published without interruption from 1922 until his death in 1952. The exposition covers 1 John 1:1 through 3:1 and was left unfinished at his passing — a testament both to the depth of his engagement with the text and the brevity of the time he was given.
Pink’s method throughout is exegetical and doctrinal: each chapter takes a single verse or phrase, examines it in its immediate and wider biblical context, draws out its doctrinal weight, and applies it to the conscience of the reader. The reader who works through these chapters will receive a thorough grounding in the themes of assurance, love, sin, fellowship, and the nature of saving faith as John develops them.
