Ellen G. White & Authority
SDAEllen G. White (1827–1915) is regarded by Seventh-day Adventists as a prophetess whose writings are the Spirit of Prophecy — the authoritative interpretation of Scripture for the last days. Her health vision, Sabbath vision, and investigative judgment teaching form the doctrinal distinctives of the movement.
GraceThe canon of Scripture is closed. God does not give new prophets after the completed Bible. Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel… let him be accursed (Galatians 1:8). The test of a true prophet is 100% accuracy (Deuteronomy 18:22) — Ellen White failed this test multiple times with false predictions.
Soul Sleep
SDAAt death, the soul ceases to be conscious and remains in an unconscious state until the resurrection. The dead know nothing. This is called soul sleep. There is no intermediate state of conscious existence for the soul between death and the resurrection.
GracePaul wrote: to be absent from the body… to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). The thief on the cross was told, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43). Stephen commended his spirit to the Lord as he died (Acts 7:59). The rich man in hell was consciously in torment (Luke 16:23). Soul sleep is contradicted on every page.
The Investigative Judgment
SDASDA doctrine teaches that in 1844, Christ moved from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary to begin an investigative judgment — reviewing the records of all professed believers to determine who is truly saved. This judgment is ongoing and its outcome determines assurance.
GraceChrist’s atoning work was completed at Calvary: It is finished (John 19:30). He sat down at the right hand of God — the posture of completed work (Hebrews 1:3). There is no ongoing heavenly investigation. Justification is a completed, instantaneous act: therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God (Romans 5:1).
Saturday Sabbath
SDASaturday (the seventh-day Sabbath) must be observed by Christians. SDA teaching holds that Sunday worship is the mark of the beast and that in the last days Sabbath observance will be the dividing line between the saved and the lost. Those who worship on Sunday in the last days are lost.
GraceThe New Testament church met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2) to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ (Colossians 2:16–17).
Annihilationism & Hell
SDAThe wicked do not suffer eternal conscious punishment in hell. After the final judgment they are annihilated — burned up completely and cease to exist. Hell is a fire that destroys, not a fire that torments eternally.
GraceHell is a place of eternal, conscious torment. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46). The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night (Revelation 14:11). The same word everlasting that describes eternal life describes eternal punishment.
Health Laws & Diet
SDAThe Levitical dietary laws of the Old Testament (abstaining from unclean meats, pork, shellfish, etc.) are binding on Christians today. Ellen White’s health vision also promotes vegetarianism. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and these laws govern its care.
GraceThere is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him (Mark 7:15). Peter’s vision declared all foods clean (Acts 10:15). Every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving (1 Timothy 4:4). The Mosaic dietary laws were fulfilled in Christ and are not binding on New Testament believers.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
Galatians 5:1
